BOSTON (AP) — Boston Bruins fans are reveling in the team’s first Stanley Cup championship in nearly four decades, as city police are keeping a close eye on the celebrations to make sure they don’t get out of hand.
Fans who had been watching the game in bars and restaurants around the city erupted in cheers when the Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-0. The Bruins last won the Cup in 1972.
Many fans headed for the TD Garden, the home of the Bruins, to continue their celebration. They were met by hundreds of police officers, some in riot gear. There were no immediate reports of arrests or injuries.
Previous raucous celebrations after big wins by other Boston sports teams resulted in three deaths and widespread vandalism.
