This afternoon, Tuesday June 14, 2011, at approximately 2:43 p.m., Portland Police officers from North Precinct responded to the report of a head-on collision in the 7800 block of Northeast Marine Drive.

Officers and medical personnel arrived and determined that one driver was deceased. Investigators from the Portland Police Bureau’s Traffic Division Major Crash Team responded to begin an investigation into the crash.

Investigators have learned that a 23-year-old male was driving a Toyota coupe eastbound on Northeast Marine Drive when he crossed over the center-line and crashed head-on with a tractor-trailer driven by a 56-year-old male.

The impact of the crash killed the driver of the Toyota instantly and drove the Toyota backwards into a Honda sedan driven by an adult female. The drivers of the tractor-trailer and the Honda were not injured. Both other drivers remained at the scene and have cooperated with investigators. Impairment does not appear to be a factor with the tractor-trailer driver. No other occupants were in any of the involved vehicles.

Northeast Marine Drive, from 33rd to 122nd, will be closed as investigators and clean-up crews finish up at the scene. Traffic should be reopened by 7:00 p.m.

At this point, investigators do not believe speed to be a factor in the crash and will not have lab results on the deceased driver for several weeks.

Names are expected to be released on Wednesday morning, pending notification of family.
