Tacoma police officer kills armed man

GIG HARBOR, Wash. (AP) -- The Pierce County sheriff's office says a 54-year-old man was fatally shot by a Tacoma police officer after the man reportedly brandished a handgun when the officer pulled him over for erratic driving. Tacoma police say the man's gun was loaded and a search of his truck found a large amount of ammunition.

The county medical examiner's office has identified the man who died early Wednesday of a wound to the abdomen as Brooks Papineau of Gig Harbor.

Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer says Papineau went to work at 6 p.m. Tuesday night, then left two hours later, saying he felt sick. Investigators are trying to determine where he was before he encountered the Tacoma officer about 2 a.m. as she drove home from work.

The officer was not hurt. The seven-year veteran was not immediately identified. She'll be on paid leave while the sheriff's office investigates the shooting.
