GLADSTONE, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon police sergeant whose spouse was shot to death last month at a suburban beauty salon has hired one of the top criminal defense attorneys in the state to represent her.

The Oregonian reports that Gladstone police Sgt. Lynne Benton has not been named a suspect or a person of interest, and police have already arrested and charged a suspect in the case.

But Benton was drawn into the investigation because of her relationship with the victim, 54-year-old Deborah Higbee Benton. The couple married last fall and separated about two months before Higbee Benton’s body was found in her beauty salon in Gladstone.

Benton has retained Lake Oswego attorney Pat Birmingham, who has handled a long list of high-profile cases ranging from murder to white-collar crimes.
