INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Larry Bird is happy Rick Carlisle finally won an NBA championship.

He just wishes it had come in Indianapolis.

After Thursday’s draft workouts at Conseco Fieldhouse, Bird told reporters he thought Carlisle had the perfect team for his style and that the Dallas Mavericks took advantage of the opportunity by winning their first NBA title.

Carlisle and Bird were friends in their playing days in Boston, and Bird hired Carlisle as an assistant on his coaching staff in 1997 with the Pacers.

Carlisle returned as Indiana’s coach in 2003, left after four seasons, then spent one season as a broadcaster before taking the Dallas job.

Bird says Carlisle could win more titles in Dallas and perhaps, one day, Carlisle will be back in Indy.
