PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The State Board of Higher Education wants University of Oregon President Richard Lariviere to become more of a team player and stop putting his university at odds with the state system if he wants to keep his job.

The Oregonian reports that board members voted this week to renew Lariviere’s contract, but only for one year and with several conditions.

Those conditions reflect friction that emerged in the Legislature this year with Lariviere’s proposal for the University of Oregon to break away with its own governing board and financial independence.

The state board is trying to win more autonomy for all seven campuses but keep them under a single university system.

Lariviere had little to say on the new contract conditions. The contract is expected to be finalized next month.
