CRESCENT CITY, Calif. (AP) — A 60-year-old man who police say shot a mother and daughter at a Crescent City trailer park before turning the gun on himself also had a “kidnapping kit” in the trunk of his car.

Del Norte County Sheriff’s Cmdr. Bill Steven says Jerry Wayne Steele shot the 14-year-old and her mother, Ashley Volore, on Tuesday at the Shangri-La trailer park.

Steven said Thursday the girl was declared brain dead, and the mother is being treated for head wounds in an Oregon hospital.

Steven said Steele later shot himself after a Crescent City police officer caught up with him at a beach parking lot.

Detectives found zip ties, duct tape, night-vision goggles and a stun gun in Steele’s rental car.
