SALEM, Ore. (AP) — As teachers in the Salem-Keizer school district wrapped up this past school year, they were also given their layoff notice.
The Statesman Journal reports that the teachers only had a few days to clean up and say their goodbyes.
The 248 teachers were part of 420 positions being cut in the district as part of budget cuts. The district’s budget is facing a $54 million budget shortfall. The layoffs were long awaited.
Teacher Mary Ann Smith says morale at her school had dropped ever since the staff cuts were announced.
