LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say fugitive Boston crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger has been arrested by the FBI near Los Angeles after 16 years on the run.
Santa Monica Police Sgt. Rudy Flores says his agency was informed of the arrest by the FBI Wednesday.
Flores says the FBI had been conducting a surveillance operation in the area. He gave no details of the arrest.
The 81-year-old Bulger is wanted in connection to 19 murders. He has been the subject of several books and was the inspiration for the 2006 film “The Departed.”
