SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A prison inmate who escaped from a work crew near the Oregon State Penitentiary was captured after a traffic stop in the Salem area.

The Oregon State Police said troopers pulled over a pickup truck just before noon Wednesday because the driver was not wearing a seat belt and there was no license plate.

A trooper saw the driver was wearing jeans with the state Department of Corrections stamp and his shirt was worn inside out. The driver’s door also had fresh green spray paint covering the words “inmate work crew.”

Forty-four-year-old David Olvera Martinez was charged with escape, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, criminal mischief and misdemeanor driving while suspended.

Martinez is serving a term for a robbery conviction in Marion County.
