HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon woman accused of strangling her 11-year-old daughter to death has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder.

The Oregonian reported that 38-year-old Kristina Buckley appeared briefly Thursday in Washington County Circuit Court in Hillsboro after a grand jury indicted her on the more serious charge, replacing an earlier murder charge.

Aggravated murder carries a potential death penalty if convicted.

Buckley did not speak in court while her defense attorneys, Greg Scholl and Chris Colburn, entered the not guilty plea on her behalf.

Police and fire crews were called to her house in suburban Sherwood on June 2, where they found her daughter, Cecilia.

An autopsy determined the girl’s cause of death was homicide, consistent with strangulation.
