Esparza wins 6th consecutive US Boxing title

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Marlen Esparza won her sixth straight title at the USA Boxing national championships Saturday night, outpointing Tyrieshia Douglas 27-16 for the flyweight crown.

Esparza, Douglas and the two other fighters who reached the 112-pound quarterfinals qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team trials to be held next year. At stake will be the chance to compete for the United States in the 2012 London Games, where women’s boxing will make its Olympic debut.

In other finals, David Carlton beat Louie Byrd 27-20 in the men’s 108-pound division; John Franklin topped Oscar Cantu 13-10 at 114 pounds; Joseph Diaz Jr. outpointed Joet Gonzalez 14-11 at 123 pounds; and Queen Underwood defeated Tiara Brown 23-21 in the women’s 132-pound bout.
