SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Salem-Keizer School District has denied a class-action grievance filed by the district union on behalf of 248 laid-off teachers.
The 248 teachers were part of 420 positions being cut in the district as part of budget cuts. The district’s budget is facing a $54 million shortfall. The layoffs were long awaited, but the release of the list of teachers took some by surprise.
The school district says the grievance is riddled with problems, and says some teachers may not have submitted it in time, the Salem Journal-Statesman reports.
Salem Keizer Education Association president Jane Killefer says the union had to ensure the layoffs were in line with the district’s collective bargaining agreement.
