Weather Eye: Sun settling in as summer arrives

I think we have graduated into the 70s now for our base afternoon temperatures and are slowly getting into the summer mode weatherwise. Saturday was a “10” in my book, sunny skies and highs in the 70s with a nice northwest breeze. I knew those clouds would depart eventually.

The extended outlook calls for mostly sunny skies this week with a few rounds of clouds and I have to mention a chance of showers midweek. Highs in the 70s, maybe low 80s Monday.

Many have asked, “What about the Fourth?” Well, sticking my neck out at this point, it appears it could be one of the best in the last 10 or 15 years as it should be dry and warm. Not hot but very pleasant. Could that be payback for our cold wet spring?

We usually think of summer beginning after the Fourth of July but this time around we could see an extended dry spell for the first ten days of July. Stay tuned!

The month of June has definitely shown that our wet La Niña period has vanished with rainfall totals for the month as of Saturday afternoon at 0.64 of an inch. This is nearly an inch below average. And with only light showers expected this week, rainfall should be on the light side and we will end the month for the first time in a while, below average.

The average high temperature for the month in Vancouver is 70 degrees and the average low at 52 degrees. Overall we are running about a degree above average for the month. And this is despite a few very chilly mornings this month with lows in the lower 40s. My low early Saturday in Salmon Creek was 44 degrees with a few reports of 39-41 degrees in the far outlying areas. Cool for June.

The garden is showing a few peppers growing and a few tomatoes have set. The corn will not be knee-high by the Fourth of July, kind of like last year. Still waiting for my nasturtiums to bloom, plenty of green leaves but no flowers. I am about ready to replant!

Enjoy your week and I’ll see you on Tuesday.
