PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- An Oregon man who tried to defend a stranger who was being called derogatory names was attacked on the street in Portland over the weekend.
KOIN-TV reports that 24-year-old Andrew Smith of Newport was punched and kicked when he stepped in to defend a man who was being harassed early Saturday morning.
Portland police said Smith was in Portland for a concert when he noticed two suspects yelling derogatory gay names at the man in a downtown area. When he tried to help the man, Smith said he was tackled from the side and assaulted before the suspects took off. He suffered scrapes, bruises and cuts.
Police said officers were interviewing witnesses when the two suspects returned to the scene and were arrested. Both were charged with assault and intimidation.
