Oregon man helps stranger, is assaulted

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon man who tried to defend a stranger who was being called derogatory names was attacked on the street in Portland over the weekend.

KATU-TV reports that Andrew Smith was punched and kicked when he stepped in to defend a gay man who was being harassed early Saturday morning.

Portland police said Smith was leaving a bar in the area when he noticed two suspects yelling slurs at the gay man. When he tried to help the man, Smith said he was tackled from the side and assaulted before the suspects took off.

Police said officers were interviewing witnesses when the two suspects returned to the scene and were arrested. Both were charged with assault and intimidation.
