Father says rapture belief not motive in shooting
Monday, June 27, 2011
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- An Oregon man is disputing a claim that his son shot and wounded a fellow worker over the belief the rapture would occur last month.
Dale O'Callaghan is accused of shooting Jerry Andrews in the shoulder last Friday at LHM Hydraulics in Eugene.
Andrews' mother, Robin O'Brien, says she knew O'Callaghan was religious and she assumed the shooting occurred because O'Callaghan was needled at work about the rapture.
But the suspect's father, Ronald O'Callaghan, said his son is not among those who believed the rapture was going to occur on May 21.
The Register-Guard reports a police affidavit says that Andrews told investigators O'Callaghan called him "one of those Satanic people" after the shooting.
