CLEVELAND (AP) — Indians outfielder Shin-Soo Choo’s broken left thumb won’t be examined until Tuesday, when he will likely undergo surgery.
Choo could miss six weeks after breaking his thumb on Friday when he was hit by San Francisco’s Jonathan Sanchez. Choo couldn’t get out of the way of Sanchez’s inside fastball, which smashed into the star right fielder’s hand and also caused a gash that required stitches.
Choo was expected to visit renowned hand specialist and surgeon Dr. Tom Graham on Monday, but the examination is now scheduled for Tuesday.
The Indians are not projecting a timetable for Choo’s return until he visits Graham.
Choo’s injury is the lastest setback for the Indians, who have gone 10-21 since May 23 and dropped into second place in the AL Central.
He was only hitting .244 with five homers and 28 RBIs, but Choo was swinging the bat better and the Indians were convinced he was coming out of his slump.
