SALEM, Ore. (AP) — One of Gov. John Kitzhaber’s top priorities is now law.

The Oregon governor signed a bill Tuesday creating an Education Investment Board, which be responsible for recommending budgets and policies to integrate education from birth through college.

The measure gives the board limited authority to come up with a plan for how it should function and to create a data system to track student progress. The board will study the feasibility of merging education oversight into a single entity.

Kitzhaber fought hard to create the panel, which was approved by the Legislature last week after months of negotiations.
