PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pirates on Monday announced that outfielder Jose Tabata has been diagnosed with a left quad strain, but his status is uncertain.

Tabata, 22, suffered the injury in the first inning of Sunday’s 4-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox in Pittsburgh, and was carted off the field. He could be placed on the 15-day disabled list later this week.

Meanwhile, the Pirates optioned infielder Pedro Ciriaco to Triple-A Indianapolis, and are expected to recall outfielder Alex Presley from Indianapolis on Tuesday, prior to their game vs. the Blue Jays in Toronto.

The Pirates (39-38) are four games behind Milwaukee in the National League Central.
