SAN DIEGO (AP) — Sixteen years after he took the America’s Cup from the United States, Russell Coutts is back in San Diego with his own regatta.

The Oracle RC44 Cup, sailed in 44-foot sloops co-designed by Coutts, runs from Wednesday through Sunday on San Diego Bay.

It’s the first major international regatta in San Diego since the 1995 America’s Cup, when Coutts’ Team New Zealand swept Dennis Conner in five races.

Coutts had a hand in bringing the America’s Cup back to the United States. He is the CEO of San Francisco-based Oracle Racing, which beat Alinghi of Switzerland in a two-race sweep in Valencia, Spain, in February 2010 to win the oldest trophy in international sports.

Coutts and Oracle Corp. boss Larry Ellison will sail together on Oracle’s entry in the 11-boat fleet.
