BEND, Ore. (AP) — The Deschutes County district attorney is accusing county employees of breaking public records law by releasing unredacted personal information to the Bend Bulletin after a request from the newspaper.

District Attorney Patrick Flaherty subpoenaed at least three county employees Monday to appear before grand jury. He requested they bring information about county records requests. Media law experts told The Bulletin it is an unusual move for a prosecutor to seek criminal indictments against public employees for releasing these types of records.

On Feb. 22, The Bulletin requested to see applications of recently hired employees in the District Attorney’s Office. Some employees’ driver’s license numbers were included in the response. The county did not redact the information.

On Thursday, Flaherty wrote the newspaper, accusing county staff of breaking the law.
