VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Jay DeMerit has been selected captain of the Vancouver Whitecaps for their first season in Major League Soccer.

Midfielders Terry Dunfield and John Thorrington are the expansion team’s alternate captains.

The 30-year-old DeMerit started all four matches for the United States during the World Cup in South Africa. The former captain of England’s Watford also started for the U.S. team during the Confederations Cup, when it lost to Brazil in the final.

While the Whitecaps are new to MLS, the club has been around since 1974. DeMerit becomes the 20th captain since its first season.
