KHANTY-MANSIYSK, Russia (AP) — Arnd Peiffer of Germany claimed his first major individual biathlon gold medal Saturday, winning the men’s sprint event at the world championships.

Peiffer timed 24 minutes, 34.0 seconds with one missed target over the 10-kilometer course. It was his third top-three finish in the discipline this season.

Martin Fourcade of France, who missed two targets and ran two penalty loops, finished 13 seconds behind for second. World Cup overall and sprint leader Tarjei Boe of Norway was another 12.2 seconds behind in third place.

The event was scheduled to be followed by a women’s 7.5-kilometer race.
