KRANJSKA GORA, Slovenia (AP) — Philipp Schoerghofer of Austria held a commanding lead after the opening run of the next-to-last men’s World Cup giant slalom race on Saturday.

Schoerghofer, a bronze medalist at the world championships last month, mastered the Podkoren course in 1 minute, 12.18 seconds to lead Carlo Janka of Switzerland by 0.65.

World champion Ted Ligety, who has won here for the past three seasons, was 0.72 back in third. The American leads the discipline standings, 26 points ahead of Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway, who finished 2.15 off the lead.

Overall World Cup leader Ivica Kostelic hurt his left arm when he hooked a gate at the bottom of the course but is expected to be fine for the second run. He was 2.34 behind.
