SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Jeff Suppan pitched three scoreless innings against his former Brewers teammates for the second time this spring training, and rookie Brandon Belt hit a two-run homer Friday to lead a San Francisco Giants’ split squad over Milwaukee 7-2.
Suppan retired nine straight batters, allowing one hit — to Erick Almonte in the first — and striking out two in his first exhibition start. He previous appearance against the Brewers was in relief.
He is competing for the No. 5 spot in the Giants’ rotation.
Belt, projected as a future starting first baseman, hit his first homer of spring training in a five-run first, a drove off sidearming right-hander Tim Dillard. Belt also singled in the third.
Brewers closer John Axford saw his first action of the spring training following food poisoning. He allowed two hits in a scoreless fourth.
