SEATTLE (AP) — A Seattle woman has been sentenced to 160 hours of community service after admitting she forged signatures in support of an initiative that would have imposed an income tax on Washington state’s highest-paid residents.

Claudia McKinney was paid by the Service Employees International Union to collect signatures for I-1098 last year. She turned in 349, but most of them were fakes.

McKinney pleaded guilty last month, and King County Superior Court Judge Michael Spearman imposed the sentence Friday.

McKinney must also pay nearly $2,000 in restitution to the Secretary of State’s Office.

I-1098 would have imposed an income tax on the top 1 percent of earners in Washington state. It was defeated handily in November.
