Cape Horn — Motorists should be prepared for around-the-clock lane closures and delays of as much as 20 minutes beginning Monday and lasting all summer on state Highway 14 near Cape Horn, east of Washougal.

An automated signal will alternate traffic on a single lane, allowing contractors to safely work on new pedestrian tunnels under the highway. Workers will build one tunnel at a time, starting with the Cape Horn-area tunnel this month and progressing to the tunnel near Salmon Falls Road by early summer.

The work is part of a $6.5 million project improving safety for hikers and motorists in the Columbia River Gorge.

The project also will straighten curves and establish turn lanes at key intersections in western Skamania County.
