WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) — Chelan County Sheriff Brian Burnett says a backcountry skier was killed in an avalanche Saturday while skiing on the southwest face of Mount Cashmere.

KXLY-TV reports that 28-year-old Daniel Zimmermann, of Leavenworth, Wash., was swept about 800 feet down a coulee and through a grouping of small trees.

Some of his companions stayed at the scene of the avalanche and attempted to help him, while others had to leave the area to call for help. No one else was injured or caught in the avalanche.

A rescue team was launched, but Zimmerman had died by the time rescuers reached him.
