PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A former Oregon couple who waged a crusade against the Internal Revenue Service and defrauded the government of more than $7 million have been sentenced to 10 years each in prison.

At the sentencing Monday, 48-year-old Micaela Dutson and 53-year-old Tony Dutson apologized, but the judge said the apologies seemed less in remorse and more about fear of imprisonment.

The couple, who moved to Mesa, Ariz., in 2003, were accused of hiding their income, failing to file tax returns and retaliating with lawsuits and liens against tax investigators.

The Oregonian newspaper reported they used Micaela Dutson’s Tigard law practice to help nearly 150 clients evade taxes through programs they set up. She resigned from the state bar in 2002.

They were convicted nine months ago of a variety of charges.
