LOS ANGELES (AP) — Scientists have recovered some 16,000 fossil bones near the famous La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles — and they’re not even halfway through digging.

The Ice Age cache was discovered in 2006 during the excavation of a parking lot next to the tar pits. Three years ago, the deposits were relocated to the tar pits site so that researchers could study them.

Besides finding a near-intact mammoth skeleton, researchers have unearthed partial skulls and lower jaws of six saber-toothed kittens.

They also discovered remains of a giant jaguar, camel, ground sloth, baby mammoths and other smaller creatures.
