KELSO, Wash. (AP) — Authorities have identified a 31-year-old Kelso man shot and killed by a SWAT officer after police say the man pointed a gun at them during a standoff in the southwest Washington city.

The Daily News of Longview says the man was William Wayne Rowton.

The newspaper reports the shooting early Tuesday followed a four-hour standoff with police who had responded to a report that a man was armed and suicidal.

Kelso Police Chief Andy Hamilton says officers tried to contact the man, who was distraught over personal issues. Hamilton says the man was shot when he was seen aiming what appeared to be a rifle out a sliding glass door.

Cowlitz County Coroner Tim Davidson says Rowton died of a gunshot wound to the head.
