Washington is one of 10 states that may have received a portion of 14,000 pounds of ground beef that could be contaminated with a potentially deadly form of E. coli and is being recalled by a Kansas company.
Creekstone Farms Premium Beef of Arkansas City, Kan., said the meat, including ground sirloin and chuck, was shipped to distributors and processors in Washington, California, Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania, according to a USDA news release.
Each case was labeled with an establishment number of EST. 27 inside the U.S. Department of Agriculture mark of inspection. The beef was shipped on Feb 22.
The news release on the USDA website said lab tests ordered by a third party came up positive for E. coli O157:H7, which can cause liver failure and death. The bacteria lives in the intestines of cows and turns up in feces. It can be killed with proper cooking.
