YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — A Yakima police officer accused of groping a woman more than a year ago has resigned.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports the decision by Gary Garbrandt prevents the possibility of his being fired.

He had been on paid leave since January, 2010, when he was accused of groping the woman after giving her a ride home when her boyfriend was arrested for drunken driving. The officer said the sexual contact was consensual.
