YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — A Libyan in Yakima is closely watching developments in his homeland, hoping to move back.

The 53-year-old Khalifa Fetesi told Yakima Herald-Republic he left more than three decades ago to avoid being drafted in Moammar Gadhafi’s army.

Fetesi owns a used car lot and sells gyros at the Yakima Farmers Market. He’s made a few visits to Libya and would like to move back to the country where his brother and two sisters live. But he’s not willing to do that with Gadhafi still in power.

He welcomes the revolt and says most of the Libyan population has wanted Gadhafi deposed for decades.

He says Gadhafi’s tight grip on communication and his iron-fist tactics against political enemies kept the people from standing up until now.
