Former Oregon Gov. Barbara Roberts has resigned from the Columbia River Gorge Commission following her appointment to the Metro council, a Portland-based regional government agency.

The 1986 Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area Act states that an appointed or elected official may not serve on the Gorge Commission.

Roberts, who served as the state’s governor from 1991 to 1995, said in a statement: “My two years as a member of the Gorge Commission have been educational, exciting and rewarding. The professional commitment of the staff, the hard work and dedication of the members of the commission and the informative input from citizens over these two years have made this a wonderful personal experience for me.”

Roberts was appointed to the 13-member bistate Gorge Commission by former Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski. Gov. John Kitzhaber will appoint her replacement.
