A fire heavily damaged a home at 8312 N.E. Highway 99 in Hazel Dell on Friday night, the home of a family who had recently dropped their renter’s insurance because the father lost his job, an official said.

Firefighters were called about 9 p.m. and arrived quickly to find the home’s front room engulfed in flames, said Dawn Johnson, spokeswoman for Clark County Fire District 6.

The family — two adults, a 12-year-old son and their dog — had been away and returned home to find about 20 firefighters from District 6 and the Vancouver Fire Department at work on the blaze.

Firefighters had the flames knocked down 10 minutes after they arrived, Johnson said. In the end, the front room was destroyed, and there was heavy smoke damage throughout the house, Johnson said. No one was injured, and part of the house was saved.

Volunteers with the local Red Cross are helping the family with temporary lodging.
