Try This: Misty River plays for a good cause

Folk-inspired acoustic quartet Misty River will headline for the seventh time a benefit concert for the Salmon Creek Kiwanis Club.

The group, which blends folk, bluegrass, country and Celtic influences, will share the stage with Clark County Grammy-winning finger-style guitarist Doug Smith, who will also perform several solo tunes.

All of the concert’s proceeds after expenses will be donated to the Kiwanis Club general fund. That money, in turn, will be given to community organizations in need.

When: 3 p.m. Sunday.

Where: Skyview High School, 1300 N.W. 139th St., Vancouver.

Admission: Tickets are $18, or two tickets are $35 through mid-afternoon today. All tickets are $20 at the door.

The concert is one of several events taking place this weekend. Other events include an eclectic concert in Ridgefield and Broadway Across America’s production of “Stomp.”

1. Stolen Sweets mix it up

What started as a Boswell Sisters tribute has morphed into a successful career for the Stolen Sweets, who will headline a concert tonight in Ridgefield.

The group has expanded its repertoire to perform songs from the 1920s through the ’40s and to include gypsy jazz guitar in its sound.

2. Performing arts groups team up for concert

The Clark College Chorale will perform several classic works in its upcoming concert.

The group will sing Moses Hogan’s “I’m Gonna Sing ‘til the Spirit Moves in my Heart,” “Lacrymosa” from Mozart’s “Requiem” and “Oh! Susannah!”

The Northwest Repertory Singers will also take the stage, performing works by Henry Mollicone, Samuel Barber, Eric Whitacre and Norman Dello Joio.

The groups will team up to present four selections: “O, America,” “Lamentations of Jeremiah,” “Song of Triumph” and “Anthem of Peace.”

3. Broadway Across America gets loud

Broadway Across America’s latest production is “Stomp.”

“Stomp” spotlights eight performers who find rhythm in everyday objects, including brooms, lighters, wooden poles, plastic bags, plungers, hubcaps and tractor tire inner tubes.

4. Intergalactic fight comes to L.A. in ‘Battle: Los Angeles’

There have been documented UFO sightings around the world in “Battle: Los Angeles,” in theaters this weekend.

The sightings take a dark turn when the forces attack one day. Los Angeles becomes the site of a massive battle in which mankind stages its last stand.

The star-studded cast is led by Aaron Eckhart and is rounded out by Michelle Rodriguez, Ne-Yo and Michael Peña. “Battle: Los Angeles” is rated PG-13.
