Ore. tribes propose off-reservation arrest power

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Leaders of the Warms Springs reservation in Central Oregon have proposed giving their officers the ability to make arrests off the reservation.

Tribal leaders say that in the sparsely populated area around the reservation, it can often take county law enforcement officers a while to get to crime scenes, while tribal officers are nearby, or actually in pursuit.

The Bend Bulletin reports that the proposal will get a hearing in the Legislature.

The Oregon sheriffs association opposes the measure. It wonders whether tribal officers off the reservation would have to obey Oregon open records and evidence laws. And it says that non-tribal officers ought to have similar authority on the reservation.
