Battle Ground announced the site of its new Veterans Memorial this week, but the design and development of the project remain in the early stages, an official said.

The memorial will be at Kiwanis Park, 422 S.W. Second Ave., which is city-owned property. While the site is no longer in question, many details about the project are yet to be determined, said Battle Ground Parks Director Debbi Hanson.

City officials decided to seek a new Veterans Memorial after Army Pvt. Andrew Shields died in Afghanistan in 2008, Hanson said. The memorial would recognize Battle Ground residents who died in conflicts dating back to World War I.

“It’s a project the council felt deeply and passionately about,” Hanson said.

She estimated that AKS Engineering and Forestry of Vancouver has completed 30 percent of the memorial’s design and development plans and hoped to be 60 percent finished by May. The firm also plans to make a materials list available in the next two months.

City officials had hoped to break ground on the memorial by Veterans Day 2010 in November. The project’s reliance entirely on donations, though, has made progress slower than once expected.

“It’s a work in progress,” Hanson said.

The city’s Park Advisory Board visited several potential sites, listing pros and cons on each, before creating a short list that included Kiwanis Park, Hanson added.

Attempts to contact representatives of Clark County veterans groups for this story were unsuccessful.
