Passenger rail service suspended north of Seattle

SEATTLE (AP) — Passenger rail service has been canceled north of Seattle at least through Monday after a mudslide hit the tracks.

Sound Transit says back-up bus service is planned for passengers who normally ride the Sounder train north of Seattle.

The mudslide hit Monday morning and buried one of the two BSNF main line tracks. Freight service was not affected because it could take the other main tracks, but BSNF placed a moratorium on passenger service because of safety concerns.

BSNF spokesman Gus Melonas says it’s been a bad year for mudslides because of all the heavy rain this winter. It’s the 20th time rail service has been suspended in Washington state this winter.
