PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon attorney general’s office and the state’s veterans affairs agency say Fred Meyer Stores has agreed to change some of its employment practices following complaints from some veterans in Oregon. The agencies investigated after some veterans said they had not received step pay increase and pension benefit adjustments during their deployment. The agencies said Tuesday the company has agreed to correct pay discrepancies for qualifying veterans.

Fred Meyer has agreed to provide a pay and pension adjustment that represents the difference between what a veteran received in step increases and pension benefits and what that person should have received had he or she remained at Fred Meyer and not been deployed.

The agreement affects Oregon residents who took military leave from Fred Meyer on or after Jan. 1, 2004, returned to work within 90 days of discharge, and were subject to a compensation structure providing pay and pension benefit increases based on time of service.

Fred Meyer is based in Portland and owned by The Kroger Co.
