Longview ticket glitch boosts anti-camera campaign

LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) — A glitch in the first three weeks of a camera-traffic ticket system in Longview is seen by opponents as another reason to throw the whole thing out.

Initiative activist Tim Eyman told The Daily News the mistake is inspiring people to sign an anti-camera petition.

Longview Police Chief Alex Perez says fines for about 300 people who were caught on camera running red lights or speeding through school zones are being dismissed. An employee for the company that runs the system punched in the wrong city code — Lynnwood, instead of Longview.

The company, American Traffic Solutions, will not charge the city for operating the system in that period.

The city is conducting an 18-month test of the system, costing $57,000 a month for 12 cameras.
