MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Esmil Rogers allowed one hit in five innings with three strikeouts and no walks to solidify his chance to make Colorado’s rotation and lead the Rockies to a 4-2 win over a Chicago Cubs split squad on Tuesday.

Rogers, a right-hander, has a chance to take advantage of Aaron Cook’s injuries (shoulder, ring finger) and nab the fifth spot in the rotation.

Chicago right-hander Randy Wells took the loss but pitched effectively, allowing three runs — two earned — on three hits in five innings. He walked a batter and struck out two.

It was the first time Wells, who has made 59 starts over the last two seasons, was touched for an earned run this spring. He ran his scoreless streak to 12 innings before allowing a run in the fourth.
