The Class 3A Greater St. Helens League’s player of the year is teaming up with the Class 2A GSHL’s player of the year, on the same team for the Les Schwab Roundball Shootout on Sunday at Battle Ground High School.

Camas’ Jacob Kaler and Hockinson’s Joshua Hall will lead the Team White All-Stars against Team Blue, led by high-scoring Evergreen guard Warren Edmondson, in the boys game.

In the girls game, 4A GSHL player of the year Justine Joudrey is scheduled to appear for Team White. She will be teamed with Prairie seniors Lanae Adams and Lauren Goecke, who will be squaring off against Prairie’s Angela Gelhar, who will be firing 3-pointers for Team Blue.

The Roundball Shootout features the top senior basketball players from Southwest Washington. The girls game will be at 4 p.m., with the girls 3-point contest at halftime.

The dunk contest will be held between the games. And the boys will have a 3-point shooting contest at halftime of their game.

Doors open at 3 p.m. Cost is $5, $3 for seniors.

Mike Arnold of Clark College and Joe Navarro of Concordia University are the boys coaches. Nancy Boone of Clark and Aaron Christian of Concordia will coach the girls teams.

Hall shines in all-state games

Hockinson senior Joshua Hall already has some all-star game experience.

Before playing in the Roundball Shootout, he led his team in scoring in the WIBCA All-State Games at Mountlake Terrace High School on Saturday.

Hall had a team-high 16 points for the Class 2A all-stars. The Class 1A squad, led by Hoquiam’s Jerid Ronquilla, who scored 21 points, won the wild contest 128-104.

Dustin Watts led the 3A all stars to a 132-117 win over the 4A stars. Watts, of O’Dea, scored 19 points. Nate Sikma of Bellevue added 13 points and 14 rebounds. Davonte Lacy of Curtis led the 4A squad with 22 points.

Another Hall to honor former coach

Heritage athlete seeks help to honor coach — Zach Hall, a track and field athlete for the Heritage Timberwolves, has designed a plaque to honor longtime Vancouver coach Lee Cave.

Cave, who died in October, coached track and field — and many other sports — over a 57-year career, including 53 in Vancouver. An assistant with the Timberwolves in his final seasons, Hall said Cave was instrumental in Hall’s development as an athlete and a person — an account shared by countless athletes.

Hall is hoping to dedicate the plaque with a permanent spot at the throwing area at Heritage High School’s track and field complex. Donations can be made out to the HHS Track and Field Booster and sent to the high school at: 7825 NE 130th Avenue, Vancouver, Wash., 98682.

Thunder soccer team taps into history

The Mountain View boys soccer team opened the season with a 2-0 victory over rival Evergreen on Monday. And the Thunder knew the reason for the victory.

“The guys said it was the uniforms,” Mountain View coach Jeff Brooks said.

To honor the 20-year anniversary of Mountain View’s first state championship team, the Thunder are wearing “throw-back” uniforms that the school’s soccer teams wore in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Mountain View reached the Class 4A state tournament every year from 1986 to 1995, peaking with three consecutive state championships in 1991-93.

This year’s Mountain View team will wear the “throw-back” uniforms through its entire non-league schedule, Brooks said.

Prairie’s Corral earns all-state honor

Prairie junior Heather Corral earned a second-team all-state selection by the Seattle Times for girls basketball.

The Times’ all-state team is for all classifications. Corral, the 3A GSHL player of the year, earned the honor despite missing Prairie’s final five games with a knee injury.

Holy Names senior Erika Johnson was the girls basketball player of the year.
