SEATTLE (AP) — A Burlington Northern Santa Fe railway spokesman says mudslides have been cleared off train tracks in Western Washington and passenger service between Seattle and Portland has resumed.

But the earliest passenger service between Seattle and Everett will resume is 5 a.m. Friday. Freight trains were traveling on those tracks on Wednesday afternoon.

Spokesman Gus Melonas (mel-OWN’-us) said Wednesday that 44 mudslides have hit rail tracks in the area over the past three days.

Heavy rainfall has weakened steep slopes above the tracks and BNSF officials continue to watch for mudslides.
