Aberdeen rerouting tsunami evacuation maps

ABERDEEN, Wash. (AP) — Aberdeen Mayor Bill Simpson has ordered new signs to direct people to assembly areas in the event a tsunami heads for the Washington coast.

The Daily World reports Aberdeen was one of the first cities to adopt “yellow brick road” walking routes to lead people to higher ground.

Last August a state hazards geologist told the city council that five out of 11 assembly areas at the end of the yellow brick roads are in danger of liquefaction — basically turning to jelly when shaken. And three or four other areas could be at risk of a landslide.

The evacuation routes were originally drawn up after the 2004 tsunami that hit Indonesia.
