Students at Shahala Middle School this afternoon were briefly evacuated when smoke from burnt food in a cooking class filled a classroom.

One Vancouver Fire Department unit responded and worked with the school’s maintenance staff to clear out the smoke. Students and staff were evacuated for about a half hour, said firefighter-paramedic Kevin Stromberg of the fire department.

The fire was first reported at 1:48 p.m. Firefighters cleared the scene at 2:24 p.m.

Stromberg said firefighters were met at the school’s front doors by Shahala’s principal, who led them straight to the classroom.

“Warning systems worked,” Stromberg said. “They practiced those things and were very efficient. It was very organized.”

Shahala Middle School is located at 601 S.E. 192nd Ave.
