SEATTLE (AP) — Analysts from IHS iSuppli say last week’s earthquake in Japan could cause shortages of the iPad 2.
The market researchers say at least five components in Apple Inc.’s tablet computer come from Japan. Those parts include storage, memory, the battery, the electronic compass and glass for the touch screen.
Even if their factories weren’t damaged in the earthquake, suppliers will likely be hurt by power outages and issues transporting raw materials and shipping products, iSuppli says.
Apple can order some components from alternate suppliers, but others are harder to substitute.
More people than expected are buying Apple’s new tablets. Right now, there’s a four to five-week wait for online orders.
Apple, based in Cupertino, Calif., did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
