Oil spill reported from ship on Willamette

Environmental regulators are monitoring a fuel spill in Portland near the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers.

U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Shawn Eggert said the spill was estimated at 100 gallons.

The spill reportedly occurred during fueling operations between the 590-foot bulk carrier Transcendent Time and a fuel barge. Department of Ecology spill responders are checking on impacts to Washington water by boat and by air.

The Coast Guard took a report of fuel leaking over the deck of the ship at about 11:30 a.m., as the ship was taking on bunker fuel from the adjoining fuel barge near Kelley Point. Eggert said fuel was being discharged out of an overflow pipe, then flowed over the deck and into the Willamette. The ship’s crew plugged the scuppers on deck to contain the spill, he said.
