CLEVELAND (AP) — Donavan Monroe scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures scoring, and the College of Charleston defeated Cleveland State 64-56 on Saturday to advance to the NIT quarterfinals for the first time.
Andrew Goudelock and Trent Wiedeman added 13 points each while Antwaine Wiggins scored 11 for the Cougars (26-10), who held Cleveland State scoreless for nearly 8 minutes in the second half.
Norris Cole led Cleveland State with 18 points, but was 6 of 22 from the field and missed all eight of his 3-point attempts. The Vikings (27-9) were 1 of 25 beyond the arc.
Wiggins’ 3-pointer with 8:42 remaining gave Charleston the lead for good, 48-46. He added a three-point play to put the Cougars ahead by five, and the Cougars iced it at the foul line.
Charleston will play Wichita State or Virginia Tech game in the quarterfinals.
